Are keyshops safe? An honest answer
IN SHORT
Not a yes or a no. It depends on the listing, not the shop — and the difference is visible before you pay.

Keyshops are not one uniform product category. An official retailer selling publisher-supplied keys, a marketplace listing from a third-party seller and an account-credential offer can appear in the same search, but they expose the buyer to different failure modes. The useful answer is therefore conditional: a compatible key from a clearly identified merchant is materially safer than a gift or account listing whose delivery depends on somebody else's account.
The three risks to check before the seller rating
First is product identity: base game, DLC, edition and platform must match what you intended to buy. Second is activation compatibility: region and blocked-country terms must fit the account. Third is delivery type: a key redeemed on your own account is easier to verify than a gift transfer, while account credentials are excluded from PriceSpawn because control and recovery remain structurally uncertain. Seller history matters after those checks, not instead of them.
| Signal | Lower-risk version | Reason to stop and verify |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Platform key | Gift workflow or account credentials |
| Region | Compatible country or confirmed Global | RU/CIS, EU-only or unknown blocklist for your account |
| Identity | Correct base game and edition | DLC, bundle or similarly named product |
| Merchant evidence | Tracked deep link and clear order terms | Redirect, missing product page or unexplained seller hand-off |

What seller ratings can and cannot tell you
A large independent rating sample can reveal patterns in delivery and support, but it does not make a specific incompatible product safe. Store-level scores also need a named source and check date; otherwise they become decorative numbers that age silently. PriceSpawn displays a trust score only when the source is documented and keeps first-party storefronts distinct from third-party marketplaces because the purchasing relationship is different.
Marketplace protection policies are useful only when the problem and deadline fit their terms. Read what evidence is required for an invalid key and how quickly a claim must be opened. Activate soon after purchase, keep the product-page wording and never reveal a usable code in a public screenshot. If the dispute concerns region compatibility, the advertised country/region is the most important evidence.
When the official store is the better deal
Use the official storefront when the saving is small, when the product terms are ambiguous or when you value direct platform support more than the price gap. The official price is not automatically the cheapest, but it removes the third-party delivery layer. For larger gaps, compare compatible keys and merchant evidence rather than assuming that every marketplace offer carries the same risk.

Check product type and region before price; check merchant evidence before checkout.
Our practical buying order
Choose your country and platform. Exclude account listings. Prefer a compatible key over a gift at a similar price. Confirm the edition and whether DLC needs a base game. Compare the two lowest eligible offers and open their merchant pages. Verify the final total and retain the receipt until activation succeeds. This sequence cannot remove every retail risk, but it prevents the category mistakes that a seller rating alone cannot catch.
Valve's Subscriber Agreement explains that Steam content is licensed to the account and that Valve does not recognize outside transfers of subscriptions. That is why an account sale is not treated as a discounted key on this site. For the detailed distinctions, read Steam key vs gift vs account and the region-lock guide.
- Are all marketplace keys fraudulent?
- No. A marketplace can deliver a valid compatible key. The risk is variable, so verify product identity, region, delivery type and merchant evidence rather than judging every listing by the category name.
- Does a high store score guarantee activation?
- No. Ratings describe past customer experience; they cannot make the wrong region, platform or product activate on your account.
- Why doesn't PriceSpawn import account listings?
- They transfer credentials rather than a license to the buyer's own account. Recovery and platform-terms risks make them a materially different product, so including them would distort the cheapest-price comparison.
